How I art - Fi's coloring process by Fishiebug How I art - Fi's coloring process by Fishiebug
EDIT: I use Paint Tool Sai, and you can see my brush setting on my FAQ: [link]

Phew that took me a while. Sorry for the horrible put together i'm lazy.
People have been asking me to make a tutorial a lot but I don't think I'm good enough to call it that so let's just call it 'my coloring process put together with vague explanations'! yay!
Hope you're happy because I should be asleep right now and instead I made this.

If you have a question please check the FAQ first, I may have already answered! [link]

I was wondering how you made the line art smooth in the finished product. I sure would like to know how you polish it to make it so amazing :D

Thank you! :>
As I've mentioned in the tutorial, I just blend it in, it's not on a separate layer, I just sort of go over the lines with the water tool.

I'm so glad I found this. I guess artist-confessions is good for more than just wasting time, lol. I tried painting like this a couple of times last week (I didn't use the water tool, I just stuck with the brush) and it actually worked out really well! I finally found a method of painting I LIKE. Holy crap, I never thought that would happen in a million years. Thank you for making this! And the picture turned out lovely. <3

Out of curiosity- hopefully this hasn't already been asked a thousand times- how long did it take you to paint this portrait, or how long does it take you to paint any portrait like it?

I'm glad you found it useful!
Actually it hasn't been asked much! This one took me about an hour and a half I assume, coloring, that is. Since I had this sketch lying around waiting to go into a dump for a long time(Fun fact there was actually blood and injuries on his face but I figured it wouldn't fit a tutorial).
How long it generally takes depends on a lot of things. Like how used to coloring like this I am (I still don't quite master this yet!), or if there's anything in the portrait I haven't drawn before, but it generally takes 1-2 hours with another hour of fixing little things that bug me until I'm satisfied.
When I wasn't used to coloring like this, it took me about 3-4 hours, and if I really struggled with something it could go up to 5.
Hope that helps!

This is nice way of painting! I've kinda always wanted to paint by merging my sketch/lineart layer with my coloring layer but I always just end up bypassing my lineart all together and coloring under it the entire time :ohnoes: Which is so time-consuming but I'm literally scared to merge my layers

I had been meaning to comment on this for a while now (I'm so glad you made it!). I'm assuming you're using sai and to blend the lineart, you're using the watercolour tool, right? I guess I was just hoping for some more specifics on the way you blend the one layered pic. Since it's the watercolour tool, the colour selected in the pallette is used, so did you just stay with your lineart colour or did you alternate colours at all (and if so, was there a particular method?)? Also, are all your linearts always a dark purple?

Oh right I should have probably included that too, I answered those in the FAQ though, I'll add it to the description.
Yes I do use Sai and that is the water tool, I also have the water brush settings here: [link]
As for the color selecting, as I stated in the tutorial, I sample the colors from the drawing itself with the color picker tool and use those (I guess this is the method?), I don't stay with the same color the whole time, since I don't just blend the lineart I also work on the drawing itself. There really isn't any "specifics" to it, just the brush settings I guess.
And no the linearts aren't always purple (It's just a colored sketch actually)
Purple is just a color that goes really well with white skin tones so I use it a lot.
For example, here I used brown just because I felt like it: [link]
And here I used a dark green because the character is green: [link]
I think you can almost always tell what color I used for the colored sketch by the color of shade under the chin of the character.
Hope that helps! :>

Awesome :D that's an interesting technique, especially how you change the color of the actual lineart.. It merges with the rest of the drawing quite well. Now I wanna try! xD

Well it's not him. Also I don't see any resemblance aside from hair color. You are being a bit silly by instantly assuming that every anime character with that hair color is America. And it says so right there in the artist comment that this is an OC.

Thank you! (I don't really see how it looks like him though)
And this coloring is based off of painting on a canvas traditionally. It's on one layer and you just keep working on it, like on a canvas.
So I wouldn't say that it won't help traditional artists as well :>
